Now Playing Ricky Mena

Mutant Emcee Radio is now featuring the Bay Area Freshman of The year Ricky Mena. You can vote for him on Facebook at facebook.com/BayAreaFreshmen10 and follow him on Twitter @RickyMena22 for more updates. Get to know the very talented lyricist and peep his bio and video below.

Ricky Mena was born two months premature, while his mother was 10,000 feet in the air on a flight to Kentucky; In short, Ricky Mena was born to fly.

Although his birth place is Fort Knox, Kentucky, Ricky moved to Oakland, California at an age too young for him to remember. As a young child, Ricky fell in love with music. While still in diapers, Ricky would sit at his grandmother’s record player listening to old Beatles albums while wearing headphones bigger than his head. As Ricky grew older, he became addicted to the lyric aspect of music. Ricky began writing lyrics of his own at the age of 9 in the form of poetry, and by the age of 12 he began combining those poems with some of his favorite instrumentals. After recording his first song on cassette tape with just a tape recorder and mic, Ricky knew he would dedicate his life to his music.

At the age of 2 Ricky's family moved to Pittsburgh, California where he was heard by a local DJ by the name of, “Slammin Sam,” who introduced Ricky to, “Rappin 4’tay." Through their collaboration, Ricky was able to record his first professional song, “Get Ready,” at just 16 years of age. Just three years later, Ricky released his first album titled, “This is me.” His second album titled, “Warrior,” was released when Ricky was just 21 years old. Shortly thereafter, Ricky moved to Long Beach, California, where he focused his efforts on his success and “making it big.” Ricky successfully networked his music, and was able to create a mix tape titled, “Above and Beyond.” Since then he has been able to work with a number of notable artists, including. B-Real of Cypress Hill, Hood Surgeon (Dr. Dre’s son), Tekneek (Kurupt’s producer), Mellow Man Ace, and many more.

Currently, Ricky resides in the San Francisco Bay Area, where in 2010, he began booking a large number of live performances at local venues. Since doing so, he has seen both his fan base and his presence in the Bay Area’s music scene, grow significantly. Ricky’s fans know him as a hard working man, and respect his dedication to his music. Tired of working hard labor, Ricky feels the urgency to make his dreams a reality now more then ever. Ricky’s turn is now.

With a deep honesty, and raw form, Ricky is passionate, driven, and talented. Ricky’s music exhibits a profound depth not often found in mainstream Hip-Hop/Rap music today. His poetic flow is both inspiring and intoxicating. He speaks from the heart, and his energy is contagious.
